for the united states are being diverted to canada. this at a time when, as jim miklaszewski is telling us, there's been unconfirmed reports there's another hijacking. all takeoffs were stopped, but they were planes in the air, obviously, at the time of these first two attacks on the twin trade towers and then on the pentagon. >> andrea mitchell is standing by with more information. she was at the state department. andrea? >> reporter: the state department, as you know, has been evacuated. secretary of state colin powell is now en route on home from lima, peru. he did not get to his destination of bogota, colombia, today. so that trip canceled. he as all other officials heading back. state department officials and the white house officials and the nsc have been evac waited. conde rice was in the situation room. cia director george tenet has been holding meetings in his office in langley, virginia. as we reported earlier, key fbi team members from their rescue efforts and anti-coordinating terror team were stranded in monterey, california, where they were on a secret exercise, military exercise. >

europe were diverted to canada. once an airliner starts out over the pond with a point of no return, there had to be some complications. was there anything that turned out to be a problem? i know it was not simple. was theemedy to divert as many of those to canada as you could? did you turnome back? were there any glitches in that or someone got close to running out of fuel on the way across the land? >> those routes across the land in in the ocean are structured. they are required to have a certain amount of fuel in the event of emergency. they would have either gone back to europe or we have greenland, iceld, and the canadian provinces all the way down. i was not concerned about an aircraft getting to a place to land at all. i knew that our procedures in setting of the north atlantic tracks in this case provide for that contingency. >> the town of gander in newfouland, there is an interesting story on that. they hav5000 people. 10,000 people landed that day on 9/11. to cape cod and the islands and perhaps maybe a direct landfall over atlantic canada, you guys, but i keep stressing a wonel to the left could mean the difference between a bad storm and a very dangerous storm. that could still make landfall somewhere along the east coast. water, still very warm, up until you get towards the east coast, and the water temperatures drop off and that's going to help weaken the storm, along with the trough that should kick the storm out to sea. but the timing of this trough is going to be essential, and there is some of the you have advisories that are out, which i just mentioned to you. so now, the latest right now from the national hurricane center, hurricane warnings in effect for parts of the mid atlantic region and, of course, watches extending all the way up now towards delaware. so this storm is getting stronger by the minute, and, of course, we are watching the track very carefully. i'll have all that updated information. i apologize, it really just came in before i came to air. so everything is fluid, jenna! jen no need to apologize. we know you're wo
